| How
do I get to the "Open Location" box?
To get to the "Open Location" box,
drag down the FILE menu and click on open location. The "Open
Location" box will appear on the screen.
How do I enter the name of the
Web site?
In this box, type in the name, or the address,
of the web site you want to visit. In almost all cases that
name begins with "http://", followed by "www.abc.com".
Let's say we wanted to visit the CNN News web site. This is
that the address would look like http://www.cnn.com. After
you've typed all that, move the mouse pointer to the "OPEN"
button in the lower-right corner of the pen location box.
How do I "follow links" on
a page?
When you place the mouse pointer over any link
it will turn into a hand with the
index finger extended.
Text links will always be underlined, but not
always blue.
When you see a graphic that is linked, there
may be a colored border, but it's not a
requirement.
When you click on a link, and you don't get a
response immediately, try waiting
a little longer. A lot of people might be trying to get at
the same link that you
are.
What is a Tool Bar and what
are its various functions?
The Tool Bar is at the top of your screen. Its various functions
are as follows:
The Back Button:
This button will take you back to the last web page that you
have visited. You can usually go all the way back to the first
page that you saw today. The button will turn grey when you
cannot go back any further.
The Forward Button:
Press this button to move forward through any of the pages
which you have visited today. This button is really only useful
when you have already seen the page that you are looking at.
Therefore it will be grey, and unusable, through most of the
time using Netscape.
The Home Button:
This button will bring you back to your starting page, which,
if you haven't changed it, will be the Netscape site.
The Reload Button:
If the web site that you are trying to visit is taking an
unusually long time to load (say, a minute or two), and then
you can press the reload button to try that web site again.
Also, if you are visiting a Web site that changes frequently,
such as an online newspaper or a weather map, you can press
this button to see the latest version of the web site.
The Images Button:
You will most likely never have to use the images button.
However, if you see outlined boxes instead of graphics all
over any given web site, then you will need to press this
button to see the images.
The Open Button:
Press this button if you would like to visit another web site.
The Print Button:
Press this button to print out a copy of the web page that's
on the screen. Remember that this will only allow you to print
the page, not the entire web site.
The Find Button:
Press this button to search the current page that you are
looking at for a word or phrase. You cannot search other pages
on the Internet by pushing this button (an example of a good
search utility is Yahoo)
The Stop Button:
If you would like to stop loading a web site, and
move on to another one, click on this button. Then click on
the open button to type in a new web site.
Is there a quick way to launch
Netscape and get to a Web site?
When running Windows 95/98, you can type
in a URL directly from the 'run' option on the start menu
and it will bring it up with your default browser.
For example, to go directly to the CNN web site:
Click on the start button.
Click on run.
Type in the URL http://www.cnn.com
Click OK.
How can I see more of my Netscape
screen?
Netscape has given the option to give some
room by turning off the "Show Directory Buttons"
feature. You can also increase the display area by only showing
the words of the tool bar rather than the words and the pictures.
Click on "Options."
Click on "General Preferences"
Click on the "Appearance" button.
Where it says "Show main Toolbar as",
click on "Text".
Click OK.
How do I turn off my "Show
Directory Buttons" feature?
The "Show Directory Buttons" feature
is a toggle or On/Off feature. To turn it off:
Click on "Options".
Click on "Show Directory Buttons" and
uncheck it.
This will hide the directory buttons.
When I click on the down arrow
for the Location field, it only shows some of the sites I
have been to. Why doesn't it show all of them?
The Location field only contains the ten
most recent URL's that have been visited. If you type in an
eleventh URL in the Location field then it will be included
in the list while the tenth URL in the list will be washed
out of the Location field.
I found an image that I
like on the web. Is there a way in Netscape that I can save
that image?
Select the image by moving the cursor over
the image and right click on the image. Click on "Save
this image as". Specify the location to which you want
to save the file in the directory dialogue box that pops up.
For example, you may want to save it in your
C:\DATA directory. Make sure the name of
the file (that you are storing the image as) is one that you
will recognize.
I tried to print a site in Netscape and it
only printed half the page. What is wrong and how can I fix
it?
You probably did not wait for the entire
document to load. If you wait long enough for the entire document
to load you will get it all printed.
I found a good article
using Netscape but I only got to print some of the pages.
How can I print only pages 5 through 9 using Netscape?
To print a range of pages, simply:
Click on "File"
Click on "Print Preview"
Scroll through the document and determine what
pages you want to print using
the "Next" page button and the "Prev"
page button.
Click on the "Print" button.
In the "Print range" panel click on
the "Pages" radio button.
Type in the page numbers needed to be printed
in the "from" and "to" edit Windows.
Click "OK".
How do I send a web page
through email?
In Communicator, Navigate to the web page
you wish to send. Go to File | Send Page (Note: Windows users
may also right-click the mouse and select Send Page)
This will launch a message composition window.
Enter the email address of the person you want to send the
page to. Edit the Subject field if necessary. Click on the
'Send' button.
In Navigator, Navigate to the page you wish
to send. Go to File | Send Frame (Note: Windows users may
also right-click the mouse to select Send Page)
This will launch a message composition window.
Enter the email address of the person you want to send the
page to. Edit the Subject field if necessary. Click on the
'Send' button.
How do I save images that
are attached to mail and news messages?
Simply bring up the popup menu over the image
(on UNIX and Windows, by holding down the right mouse button;
on Mac, by holding down the mouse button for about a second)
and select "Save This Image As...". This will save
the GIF, XBM, or JPEG image, removing any encoding which was
done to it in transit (that is, MIME Base64 encoding, or UUencoding.)
How do I view and/or clear
the Netscape History File?
Netscape Navigator and Communicator maintain
a "history file" to keep track of every web page
you've visited recently. This file remembers every URL you've
accessed, including every web page you went to, every image
on those web pages, and every file you downloaded through
Netscape Navigator or Communicator. This is to let the program
remember what web links you've already visited so it can make
the "visited" links show up in a different color
than the "unvisited" links. You can set the number
of days that the browser remembers links.
In Netscape Navigator, select "General
Preferences" from the Options menu, and click the "Appearance"
tab. Then change the "Visited links expire after N days"
field to anything you want. You can click on "Expire"
now to immediately clear the history.
In Netscape Communicator, select "Preferences"
from the "Edit" menu and click on "Navigator"
in the list along the left side of the window. Then change
the "Visited links expire after N days" field to
anything you want. You can click on "Expire now"
to immediately clear the history.
If you set "Visited links expire after
N days" to '3', then any web pages you visited more than
three days ago will be forgotten from the history file.
If you want to see what is listed in the
history file, type in this URL in the "Location"
field at the top of the browser window: "about: global"
This will show you all of the URL's loaded,
including a separate entry for every image. It is not sorted
chronologically, and it may be very large and take a few minutes
to display completely.
How do I print Bookmarks?
The Bookmarks window does not allow for any
type of printing functions, since it was designed for hyper
linking. However, there is a workaround. Open the file Bookmarks.htm
in your Netscape browser. You can do this by clicking on File
| Open File (Open Page in Communicator). Once the page comes
up, you can then click on File and Print.
The only down side to this is that you will
not be able to print the URL address that is attached to each
bookmark. You could also bring it up in the Browser and click
on View and View Document Source. Then highlight everything,
press Ctrl+C, open Notepad and paste it. This will have all
of the URL's and bookmark titles. Again, there is a down side
as there will be a lot of HTML code included and you will
have to clean it up.
